WriteAtHome Economics introduces students to the basic concepts of economics and the historical context in which they arise and develop. This 16-week class will cover basic economic concepts and issues within their historical context,  such as

  • The historical idea of money and currency, resources, and trade
  • Important historical narratives and turning points in the development of economics
  • Credit and debt, loans and interest rates, banking, fiat and backed currency
  • Economic theory from the Renaissance through the Enlightenment and Modern Era
  • Connections between politics and economy and historical foundations for our monetary system in the US.

The course provides a foundation for students to understand the “whys” behind the national and global economy through an examination of concepts and historical context. This is not a personal finance or budgeting class.

This class meets on Thursdays at 4 pm, Eastern Standard Time.

Student expectations:

  • attend weekly class sessions (recordings will be available after each session)
  • complete weekly reading assignments
  • complete weekly quizzes and discussion posts
  • one paper on a topic concerning economic theory or concepts, an historical event, or important figure in economic history

The required weekly reading will be assembled from various articles, primary sources, and textbooks available for free online, with links provided in the weekly required reading section of Canvas. The reading will be mostly synchronous with the weekly lessons.

Note: Space is limited. Be sure to enroll early to secure your spot.
